Yli Agnitio

The magical immunity of the Osai and the magical aptitude of the Yli has left Esani in a constant state of flux. He has no telekinesis. He has no enhanced senses. He cannot bond to kirin. He cannot sing a lock open; his singing is so terrible it can make the deaf cry. He is neither immune to nor capable of performing magic. However, he is resistant to poisons and can stand the cold, though not as much as a fullblooded Yli.
Advanced Skills:
Herbalism (mastery)
Massage and Pressure Therapy (novice)
Personality:
Calm. Compassionate. Protective and selfless. Esani is not any of these things. To those who meet him, he is a conceited know-it-all. He exudes an air of pompous sophistication, parading around in his jewels and silks, reciting obscure lines from the epics. He pays more attention styling his hair and applying makeup than listening to prayers. Callous and greedy, the agnostic doubts if the spirits even exists. They have yet to grant his wishes, and his growing disbelief had won him the nickname Esani the Faithless by other priests. Some would call him a cold-hearted bastard, and they are not far wrong.

But inside, Esani is a nervous wreck. Living up to impossibly high standards has made him tense and uneasy. His stress manifests into nervous ticks; a quivering eyebrow, a trembling finger; the more he suppresses them, the worst they get.

His children are the only ones who can bring out the warmer side of him. He is an indulgent father who gives his adopted sweetlings everything he could not have as a child. It’s hard to tell if actually loves them – he is known to dump them when they are no longer cute – but he considers it love, selfish and twisted as it is.
Appearance:
Land Form

When clothed, Esani bears the soft, unassuming features of the Yli: willowy frame that blurs genders, long limbs, delicate face. His thick mane of blueblack hair, inherited from his Osai mother, is braided away from his face into a ponytail. His nose is straight-bridged, his cheekbones high, his lips peachpink with the hint of a pout. He decorates his eyes with a Yli custom that accentuates their beauty, though most Yli would consider him ugly, a fact that vexes him greatly.

Though his taste in makeup is…eccentric…it does not take away from the overall beauty. That is, unless you see him unclothed.

Mottled skin. Pus-filled boils. If his face is a beauty, his actual body is a beast, pocketed with disfiguring lesions. His chest is terribly slanted, all the features on one side sloping half an inch lower than the other. His left arm is twisted unnaturally, while his left foot is two inches shorter than the right. Though his hands appear normal, everything from the wrist and neck down is a mess of swollen, lumpy, purple- yellow-blackness. Esani is forced to walk with a limp because of these birth defects.

Mer-Form

It might be a product of his birth defects, or it could be a clashing of his Yli/Osai blood. Whatever the reason, Esani’s form in water is uglier than his form on land. During transformation, the purple boils underneath his clothes spread to cover his arms and half his face. His legs split to form not a tail but four long thin sinewy tentacles. They are black streaked with blue, like his hair. Incidentally or not, the two left tentacles like his left leg are shorter and crippled, and all four are covered with boils. He has no scales and his skin-to-tail transition is very gradual. If not for the extra appendages and the port-wine birth stain, Esani might have passed off as just another Agnito.
History:
Twenty nine years ago, a Yli bard had an affair with a married Osai woman. The baby was deformed, crippled, and sexless. The mother abandoned it. The father decided to raise it as a girl, and named her Esaneli Nainohu.

The father’s family did not want the child. The Nainohu were very religious and thought mixed bloods were a crime against nature. The child in turn became the family’s dirty secret, and was ostracized and ridiculed.

Esaneli, or Neli as she was known, did not grow up in confusion. She knew exactly her position. She was a genderless halfbreed – a nobody. She was comfortable in that role. The child grew up respecting, even revering purebloods for their beauty, and was quite fine with being treated as a slave.

Growing up, she became friends with her cousin Kisaseki, who took her in as confidante and ‘pet.’ They two were raised together and became very, very close.

As a child, the half-Yli dreamed about what it would be like to live on land. She wondered who her mother was, what she was like, how her people treated her. She grew curious about the Osai and hoped, perhaps, that she’d meet one.

Neli ran away at seven and met Jacinthe, another halfbreed and a priestess, who took her in. Jacinthe was a kind and nurturing mother figure, and it was she who first introduced her to the Ethian spirits, particularly Balance.

Jacinthe was the first mixedblood Neli had met, and the priestess left an impression on her. She returned to her family but began to doubt their teachings. Maybe there was a life for her beyond being Kisaseki’s pet. Maybe, she thought, she could actually be someone like Jacinthe.

Neli grew bitter. She resented the Yli. They were beautiful and intelligent and she would never reach their level or earn their respect. After years of pent-up anger, she made the decision to leave her family and Yli roots for good.

At fourteen, she began to live on land. She took odd jobs here and there, sometimes resorting to stealing to get by. One day the teen was caught red-handed, and after being thrown in jail met with another priest. This time it was Donavien, of the warrior sect of Balance, and he offered to help her if she agreed to come with him. Neli was quick to accept.

The divinity school, also called the priest academy or academy of the spirits, trained young men and women into the priestly service. Some of them were from rich families. Most of them were pureblood. All of them had no interest in a mixedblood that smelt of fish.

Yearning for her peers’ approval, Neli – who by now had given up her childish nickname and went by Esaneli – returned to her old ways and tried to please the purebloods. She did their homework, cleaned their rooms. She let them cheat on her tests. She did everything she could to make them like her, and for a while it worked.

She became devoted to the spirits. The Yli gods abandoned her, but perhaps she would find more favor with the Ethian’s. Esaneli prayed for Balance to heal her body, and purify her dirty blood.

At sixteen, the acolyte took a year off of studying to learn more about her mother’s race, the Osai. It did not go well. She tried to bond with a kirin, and failed. She tried to be a warrior, and failed. Ashamed of her failure, she stormed back to the academy and refused to associate with those “barbarians” ever again.

She threw herself into her studies, driven by pride, determination, and more importantly, shame. With time and patience, she mastered her grip on the Ethian language, as well as other fields. Poetry. Medicine. History. Esaneli soaked knowledge up at incredible speeds. But it wasn’t enough.

Her worship of Balance became an obsession. At sixteen she was devout, at seventeen she was a fanatic. Inside her burned a fire so blinding, so frighteningly zealous, that it consumed her whole. She did not need the Osai or Yli. All she needed was Balance.

She went through intense training, from fasting to self-mutilation, to praying day and night in an attempt to please the spirits. Her “friends” found her less useful and left her. The elders were concerned, but let her be. Esaneli hoped that through perseverance the spirits would finally take pity and change her body into the healthy, perfect pureblood she wanted to be.

Her prayers were answered…sort of.

Adolescence was a trying time for anyone. But Esaneli, it was doubly so. She did not grow breasts, but her shoulders broadened. Her hips widened, but her voice grew deeper.
Her body underwent a gradual, yet stunning transformation, until finally at age eighteen Esaneli looked in the mirror and realized she was no longer a she.

The priests were just as stunned. While the doctors who studied her knew that the halfbreed had no actual sex, the elder clerics didn’t, and they were confused as to what to do. Only Donavien seemed not to care, and he treated Esaneli like he had always treated her.

Thus began a strange twilight period for Esaneli. She had been raised as a girl. All her learned mannerisms and behaviors were feminine. Yet everyone she encountered treated her as, and expected her to act like, a man. It was both confusing and frightening for the teen.

In this confusion came a deep-seated hatred. It wasn’t fair. She didn’t ask for this body or her mixed blood. All she wanted was to be pure and perfect like the spirits; she had prayed days and nights and still, nothing worked. Perhaps her family had been right; the spirits really don’t like.

She began to resent Balance. In the temple, the statues of the Holy Lady would smile at her, kindly, mockingly. She would see Balance in every woman; all graceful and beautiful, all damnably perfect. All the privileges she was denied – being able to have children, being healthy – they were granted. Not because they earned it, but because they were pureblood. Because they were women.

And out of that hatred for women, Esani was born.

It did not happen overnight. But over a stretch of months, people became accustomed to the new appearance, and addressed the priestess as a priest. To avoid any questions, she…he transferred to a new academy of the spirits, and had his name legally changed. His medical records were classified, and all ties to her former life were cut.

At age twenty Esani Nainohu graduated and became an official priest. Since then, he climbed up the ranks of the priesthood. He became an accomplished scholar and speaker. But it wasn’t faith that drove Esani to the top. It was hatred.

He grew arrogant. His fellow priests found him disdainful company. He flaunted his accomplishments, boasted about his rewards and titles. He raised fund-raisers for the temple and spent the money on himself. To hell with Balance. From now, all his attention and devotion would be for him, not her.

Perhaps he thought it was the greatest triumph over purebloods, to steal their children. Perhaps he wanted to prove that he could still raise children, though not a woman. Or perhaps he was just lonely. Either way, Esani began adopting children from the orphanage and taken him under his care. He would make them humble, like women should be, for most of them were girls.

Similarly, he began to buy slaves, most of them girls as well. The priest inflicted on them a fury that he had not felt in years. He disfigured their pretty faces, lopped off their perfect breasts. For those that were too beautiful to cut up, he kept as ornaments. Esani surrounded himself with beauty.

At twenty five he was charged with renovating the ancient temple at Myanar and keeping the temple coffers. Instead, he used the money to enhance his own wealth. Since the spirits clearly did not exist – and if they did, they disliked him – then it wouldn’t matter what he did.

At twenty seven Esani was second highest cleric in Myanar, and enjoying every minute of it…Until he met Dominic Vega, that wily conman, Hermione Rapport, that ugly witch, and Kenshin Marsin, that sexy---sinful bastard. He prefers not to speak of them.

Now, at twenty nine, after the plague, Esani had come full circle. He is now in the Yli City of Onise serving as officer to the mayor, who of all people is a pleasureslave. And, in his hatred of Yli and women, he wants to use his power to make them both bow before him.
